In recent times, the phenomenon of “foreign terrorist fighters” (FTFs) has expanded worldwide, especially in connection with the ongoing conflicts in Syria and Iraq. Although accurate and reliable data on FTFs are difficult to obtain, estimates suggest that more than 40.000 individuals have travelled from more than 100 countries in the world to join this conflict.
The increased number of returning FTFs, along with the increased frequency of terrorist acts worldwide, represents a challenge for international and national security.

On the occasion of the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, the Inter-Agency Coordination Group against Trafficking in Persons (ICAT) calls on governments to better address the misuse of internet and information technology to facilitate human trafficking, and harness the potential of technology to enhance investigations and prosecutions of perpetrators, as well as the provision of assistance to victims.
On 16-17 July 2019, a UNICRI Team went to Beirut to discuss and consult with the Lebanese authorities responsible for preventing the trafficking of radiological and nuclear (RN) material. This regional project is funded by ‘Global Affairs Canada’.

The 4th edition of the UNICRI Summer Course on Migration and Human Rights ended on July 19th. The Course took place from the 15th of July to the 19th of July in Rome, Italy, and was organized by UNICRI in cooperation with John Cabot University.
