A new report “Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Law Enforcement” has been published by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute’s (UNICRI), Centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics, and Innovation Centre of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).
The report summarizes key findings, challenges and recommendations presented and discussed during the first INTERPOL - UNICRI Global Meeting on the Opportunities and Risks of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Law Enforcement held in Singapore on 11-12 July 2018.
At the 4th INTERPOL-UNICRI Global Meeting on Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Law Enforcement, the law enforcement community reaffirmed its commitment to responsible AI innovation.
The global event concluded on a high note of this commitment following three days of intensive discussions and collaborative workshops on progress made in the area of responsible AI since the last meeting in 2020.
The third session of UNICRI’s global pilot training series on Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) Innovation in Law Enforcement successfully concluded, with the remarkable participation of 250 law enforcement representatives from across Europe. The webinar, titled "An Introduction to the Toolkit for Responsible Artificial Intelligence Innovation in Law Enforcement," took place on 13 November 2023 and was co-organzied by UNICRI, INTERPOL and CEPOL.
On 18 July 2023, the United Nations Security Council held its first-ever debate on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in connection with peace and security, during which the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, and the State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Takei Shunsuke, highlighted the contributions of various initiatives by UN entities, including UNICRI’s work on AI in the context of counter-terrorism.
“Terrorism affects every region of the world. It preys on local and national vulnerabilities and the instability of political, economic and security systems,” Antonio Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, recently told global counter-terrorism actors.
On June 6-7th, under the AI for Safer Children initiative, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), through its Centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics, in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), conducted a regional training in Singapore. The training brought together over 80 law enforcement participants from the Singapore Police Force, as well as India, Indonesia and Brunei.
